PMS vs AIF vs Mutual Funds — Which Should an HNI Choose

✍️ Manoj Kumar📅 September 2026⏱️ 9 min read📍 Ashvamedha Finance, Hyderabad

Until April 2025, this was a two-way choice. SEBI added a genuine third option since then that most comparisons still haven't caught up to. Here's the real, current picture.

The Four Options, Not Three

Most comparisons of "PMS vs AIF vs Mutual Funds" are now missing a real fourth category: the Specialised Investment Fund (SIF), which SEBI introduced in April 2025. This genuinely changes the decision for investors who found the jump from mutual funds directly to PMS's ₹50 lakh minimum too large a leap.

Minimum Investment, Side by Side

VehicleMinimum InvestmentStructure
Mutual FundAs low as ₹500 (SIP)Pooled, publicly available
SIF (new, since April 2025)₹10 lakhPooled, long-short strategies within a mutual-fund-like framework
PMS₹50 lakhSecurities held directly in your own demat account
AIF₹1 crore (₹25 lakh for Angel Funds, accredited investors only)Pooled, category-dependent strategy

Why the Structural Difference Matters More Than the Minimum

Beyond ticket size, the real difference is what actually happens to your money. In a mutual fund, you own units of a pooled scheme. In an SIF, similarly pooled, but with more flexible strategy mandates (including long-short positioning not available to standard mutual funds). In a PMS, securities are held directly in your own name and demat account — you can see exactly what you own, and every trade is a taxable event for you individually, not the fund. In an AIF, your capital is pooled with other investors into a fund structure that executes a specific strategy (private equity, listed derivatives, structured credit, depending on category) that a standard PMS typically can't.

Taxation — A Real Point of Difference

VehicleTax treatment
Mutual FundTaxed only at redemption — LTCG (12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh exemption) or STCG (20%)
SIFGenerally follows mutual-fund-style taxation, given its regulatory framework
PMSEvery individual trade the manager makes is a taxable event in your hands directly, not deferred to redemption
AIF Category I & IIPass-through taxation — gains taxed in investors' hands, at applicable rates
AIF Category IIITaxed at the fund level, at the maximum marginal rate (~42.7% including surcharge and cess)

This tax structure difference is a genuinely important, often underweighted factor — a PMS's per-trade taxation can create a meaningfully different real-world tax burden than a mutual fund's redemption-only taxation, independent of which one actually performs better.

Liquidity — Where the Real Trade-Offs Show Up

Mutual funds offer daily liquidity. PMS technically has no SEBI-mandated lock-in, though exit fees and the liquidity of underlying holdings can still matter in practice. AIFs are the least liquid — Category I and II are typically close-ended with lock-ins ranging from 3 to 10 years depending on the specific fund's structure, while Category III varies but often allows somewhat more flexibility.

A Practical Framework

Your situationConsider
Building wealth, most investorsMutual funds — lowest cost, highest liquidity, broadest accessibility
₹10L+, want more active/tactical strategy exposure without a huge minimumSIF — genuinely worth understanding given how new and underexplored it still is
₹50L+, want direct ownership and customizationPMS
₹1Cr+, want access to private markets or hedge-style strategiesAIF, category chosen based on specific strategy fit

The Bottom Line

None of these is universally "better" — each serves a different combination of ticket size, control, and strategy access. The SIF category specifically is worth a serious look if you're in the ₹10L-50L range and have outgrown a purely mutual-fund approach but aren't yet at PMS's ₹50L threshold — it's new enough that many investors in exactly this position haven't heard of it yet.
