PMS vs AIF for HNIs in India 2026 — Structure, Liquidity, Fees & Risk

PMS and AIFs are both used by wealthy investors, but they are not the same product. The biggest differences are how money is managed, what the portfolio can invest in, how liquid it is and how much visibility the investor gets.

Quick distinction: PMS is portfolio management for a client under a mandate. An AIF is a pooled alternative investment vehicle governed by SEBI's AIF framework.

PMS: when the structure may be useful

PMS can be relevant when an investor wants a professionally managed portfolio with a defined investment mandate and visibility into the securities held for the client. The strategy, fees and risk profile can vary significantly between portfolio managers.

AIF: when the structure may be useful

AIFs can be relevant when an investor wants access to strategies or opportunities that may not fit a traditional listed portfolio. But the investor should understand lock-ins, drawdowns, capital calls where applicable, valuation methodology and exit conditions.

Do not compare only returns

A PMS showing a high return and an AIF showing a lower return cannot be compared fairly without considering the period, benchmark, fees, liquidity, leverage, drawdowns and underlying risk.

Questions to ask before investing

  1. What exactly does the strategy invest in?
  2. What is the maximum expected drawdown?
  3. How long can the money remain locked?
  4. What are management, performance and fund-level expenses?
  5. How are securities or private assets valued?
  6. What happens if I need the money earlier?

Portfolio role matters

PMS and AIFs should be evaluated as parts of the overall portfolio. An investor who already has a large business, real-estate or unlisted exposure may not need more illiquidity simply because a new product is available.
