SIP Calculator & Step-Up SIP — Complete Guide to Understanding Your Returns

Most people use SIP calculators but don't fully understand what the numbers mean. Why does ₹5,000/month for 20 years at 12% give ₹50 lakh but 30 years give ₹1.76 crore? And what is a Step-Up SIP and why is it so much more powerful? This guide explains everything.

What is a SIP?

A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) is a method of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month — automatically, on a chosen date. You invest ₹5,000 on the 5th of every month. Every month, this amount buys units of your chosen mutual fund at the current NAV (price). Over time, you accumulate units at various prices — sometimes high, sometimes low — averaging out your cost.

How SIP Compounding Works — The Magic Explained

The reason SIP works is compounding. Returns earned on your investment are reinvested — so you earn returns on returns. Over long periods, this creates explosive growth.

Example at 12% CAGR:

Monthly SIPDurationTotal InvestedFinal ValueWealth Created
₹5,00010 years₹6,00,000₹11,50,193₹5,50,193
₹5,00020 years₹12,00,000₹49,95,740₹37,95,740
₹5,00030 years₹18,00,000₹1,76,49,569₹1,58,49,569

Notice: doubling the time from 15 to 30 years doesn't double the result — it multiplies it by 6–7x. This is compounding at work.

What is a Step-Up SIP?

A Step-Up SIP (also called Top-Up SIP) increases your SIP amount every year by a fixed percentage. As your salary grows, your SIP grows too — automatically.

Example: Start with ₹5,000/month, 10% annual step-up, 12% returns, 20 years:

Final corpus (Step-Up SIP): approximately ₹98–1,00,000 — nearly double the regular SIP result of ₹50 lakh!

Mid Cap12%15%18%

Our recommendation: Use 12% for long-term equity SIP projections. It's realistic based on Nifty 50's ~13.5% CAGR over 20 years, conservatively discounted.

How to Start a SIP in India

  1. Complete KYC — link Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account on any MF platform
  2. Choose a platform — Zerodha Coin, Groww, MFCentral, Paytm Money, or directly at AMC website
  3. Choose your fund — for a beginner, a Nifty 50 Index Fund or Flexi Cap Fund is a safe start
  4. Set up auto-debit — SIP deducts automatically on your chosen date each month
  5. Don't stop during market falls — that's when you're buying cheapest
