Guaranteed Monthly Income After Retirement in India
When the salary stops, what you really want is a credit SMS on the 1st of every month that never fails. Here are the seven ways to build that guaranteed monthly income in India, what each pays today, and how to stack them so the money never runs short.
The short answer
- Government schemes (SCSS 8.2%, POMIS 7.4%) pay the most but only for 5 years and up to a limit.
- Annuities and guaranteed income plans lock your income for 20–30 years or for life.
- Best approach: a "salary ladder", stacking 3–4 sources so essentials are always covered.

Why "guaranteed" matters after retirement
While you are working, a bad market year is an opportunity. After retirement, it is a problem, because you are withdrawing money at the same time it is falling. Your rent, groceries and medicines do not wait for the Sensex to recover.
That is why most retirement experts suggest an income floor: a base level of income that comes in every month regardless of markets, interest rate cuts or your health. Everything above the floor can be invested for growth.
7 ways to get guaranteed monthly income
1. Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS)
For people aged 60+ (55+ for those who took voluntary retirement). Currently 8.2% a year, paid every quarter, up to ₹30 Lakh per person. ₹30 Lakh gives ₹61,500 a quarter, about ₹20,500 a month. A couple can open one account each. Tenure is 5 years, extendable by 3. Interest is taxable.
2. Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS)
7.4% a year, paid monthly. Limit ₹9 Lakh single or ₹15 Lakh joint. ₹15 Lakh gives ₹9,250 a month. 5-year tenure, interest taxable. Good for the monthly cash-flow part.
3. Guaranteed income plans (life insurance)
You pay premiums for a fixed period while working (say 10 years), and the plan pays a fixed income for 20–30 years, often with your premiums returned at the end. For a 40-year-old paying ₹5 Lakh a year, income is roughly ₹5.6 Lakh a year from age 53 to 82, plus ₹50 Lakh back at the end and life cover on the way. The return (about 6–6.5%) is lower than SCSS, but it is locked for 30 years, not 5, and can be tax-free.

You pay a lump sum, usually at retirement, and an insurer pays you a pension for life. Rates depend on age and the option you choose (with or without return of purchase price, single or joint life). Strength: it never runs out, however long you live. Weakness: the pension is fully taxable, and the money is usually locked for good. Read our guide to annuity types explained.
5. RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds
Government of India bonds that pay interest every 6 months, at a rate linked to NSC (0.35% above it, currently about 8.05%). 7-year lock-in (shorter for senior citizens), no upper limit. Interest is taxable and resets every 6 months.
6. Bank fixed deposits (monthly payout)
Senior citizens get an extra 0.25–0.75% from most banks. Easy and flexible, but rates fall when RBI cuts the repo rate, and you have to renew at whatever rate is on offer then. Covered up to ₹5 Lakh per bank by DICGC insurance.
7. Rental income
Not strictly guaranteed (vacancies, repairs), but for many Indian families a rented flat is a pension. Count it, but don't count on it alone.
Comparison table (Oct–Dec 2026 rates)
| Option | Rate / return | Payout | Locked for | Limit | Taxable? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SCSS | 8.2% | Quarterly | 5 yrs (+3) | ₹30 L per person | Yes |
| Post Office MIS | 7.4% | Monthly | 5 yrs | ₹9 L / ₹15 L joint | Yes |
| Guaranteed income plan | ≈ 6–6.6% IRR | Yearly / monthly | Income for 20–30 yrs | By budget | No, if premiums ≤ ₹5 L/yr* |
| Immediate annuity | Varies by age & option | Monthly–yearly | For life | None | Yes |
| RBI Floating Rate Bonds | ≈ 8.05% (resets) | Half-yearly | 7 yrs | None | Yes |
| Bank FD (senior) | Varies by bank | Monthly / quarterly | You choose | ₹5 L insured per bank | Yes |
| NSC / 5-yr Post Office TD | 7.7% / 7.5% | At maturity / yearly | 5 yrs | None | Yes |
Small savings rates are those notified for Oct–Dec 2026 and are revised every quarter. *And life cover is at least 10× the yearly premium. Always check current rates before investing.
Build your retirement "salary ladder"
No single option is perfect. The trick is to stack them so each covers the other's weakness. Here is an example for a couple who need ₹60,000 a month in retirement:
| Rung | Source | ≈ Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Long-term floor | Guaranteed income plan bought at 40–45 (₹5 L/yr for 10 yrs) | ₹46,700 |
| 2 — Government safety | SCSS in one spouse's name, ₹10 L | ₹6,800 |
| 3 — Monthly cash flow | POMIS joint, ₹10 L | ₹6,200 |
| 4 — Growth & inflation | Mutual fund corpus, SWP only when needed | Top-up |
| Total guaranteed | ≈ ₹59,700 |
Rung 1 is the one you must buy early. SCSS and POMIS can be opened on the day you retire. But a guaranteed income plan that pays from age 53 needs to be started around 40. That is the part most people miss, and then end up relying entirely on FDs whose rates keep falling.
5 mistakes to avoid
- Putting everything in FDs. Rates can fall sharply when RBI cuts; your income falls with it.
- Ignoring inflation. Fixed income buys less every year. Keep a growth portion (equity funds) for the later decades.
- Forgetting health insurance. One hospital bill can wipe out years of income. Buy cover before 60.
- Locking all money away. Keep 12 months of expenses in liquid funds or a savings account for emergencies.
- Starting too late. Guaranteed income plans and annuities give much better numbers when bought earlier.

Frequently asked questions
Which scheme gives the highest guaranteed monthly income after retirement?
Among government schemes, the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) pays the highest rate, currently 8.2% a year, paid quarterly, up to ₹30 Lakh per person. Post Office Monthly Income Scheme pays 7.4% monthly. For income that must last 20–30 years, annuities and guaranteed income plans lock a rate for much longer than the 5-year schemes.
How can I get ₹50,000 a month after retirement?
A couple can combine SCSS (₹30 Lakh each at 8.2% ≈ ₹41,000 a month together), Post Office MIS (₹15 Lakh joint ≈ ₹9,250 a month) and a guaranteed income plan or annuity bought earlier. The right mix depends on how much you have saved and when you retire.
Is pension from an annuity taxable?
Yes. Annuity income is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate every year. Interest from SCSS, POMIS and FDs is also taxable. Income from a guaranteed income plan can be tax-free if premiums are within ₹5 Lakh a year and the policy meets the life-cover condition.
What is the safest monthly income scheme for senior citizens?
Post Office schemes like SCSS and POMIS are backed by the Government of India, which makes them among the safest. Their limitation is the 5-year term and investment caps, after which the rate can change.
Can I start a guaranteed income plan at 50?
Yes. Many guaranteed income plans accept entry up to about age 55–60, though the income per rupee and the life cover reduce with age. Starting at 40 to 45 gives better numbers and income from your early 50s.
