The terms 'financial planner' and 'financial advisor' are used interchangeably in India โ€” but they mean different things, have different qualifications, and serve different functions. Understanding the difference helps you find the right person for your needs.

The Terminology Problem in India

Unlike the US (where "financial advisor" and "financial planner" are defined and regulated), India has more fluid terminology. The same person might call themselves a "financial consultant," "wealth manager," "investment advisor," or "financial planner" โ€” with vastly different qualifications behind each title.

SEBI's regulation only strictly defines one category: Investment Adviser (IA). Everything else is marketing language.

SEBI Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) โ€” The Only Regulated Category

A SEBI Registered Investment Adviser (IA) is the only person in India legally allowed to give personalised investment advice for a fee under SEBI's IA Regulations 2013.

Requirements to become a SEBI RIA:

Check any advisor's SEBI registration at: sebi.gov.in โ†’ Intermediaries โ†’ Investment Adviser.

CFP โ€” Certified Financial Planner

CFP is an internationally recognised certification for financial planners. In India, it's awarded by FPSB India (Financial Planning Standards Board India).

CFP requires:

A CFP without a SEBI IA registration can guide and educate you but technically cannot charge fees for personalised investment advice. A SEBI IA with CFP = highest credentialed combination.

Mutual Fund Distributor (MFD) โ€” The Most Common "Advisor"

Most people calling themselves financial advisors in India are actually AMFI-registered Mutual Fund Distributors. Key differences:

The "Financial Planner" Title in Practice

In India, "financial planner" typically refers to someone who takes a comprehensive view of your finances โ€” not just investments. A good financial planner covers:

They may or may not be SEBI registered โ€” depends on whether they charge for advice or earn commissions from products sold.
