Best Investment Options for NRIs in India — A Category-by-Category Guide
Not a ranked list of specific picks — a clear-eyed look at what each category of investment actually offers and constrains for an NRI, so you can match your own goals to the right one.
Mutual Funds — The Most Accessible Starting Point
Available to most NRIs through NRE or NRO accounts, mutual funds offer diversification and professional management without needing a specialized trading setup. The genuine constraint: a number of Indian AMCs restrict subscriptions from US and Canada-based NRIs specifically due to FATCA-related compliance costs — this is a business decision by individual AMCs, not a blanket legal bar, and more than 10 AMCs currently do accept US/Canada NRIs, but it means fewer choices than resident Indian investors have. Separately, US-resident NRIs face a real additional complication under US tax law (PFIC rules) worth understanding fully before investing — covered in detail in a separate article.
Direct Equity — Requires the PIS Route
NRIs can invest directly in Indian stocks, but through the Reserve Bank's Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS), which requires a designated PIS-linked bank account and a broker offering NRI trading accounts. This is more operationally involved than mutual fund investing and suits NRIs who specifically want direct stock selection rather than pooled fund management.
Fixed Deposits — NRE, NRO, and FCNR
NRE FDs offer tax-free interest in India and full repatriability — a genuinely attractive capital-preservation option. NRO FDs are for India-sourced income, with interest taxable and subject to TDS. FCNR deposits are held in foreign currency, avoiding currency conversion risk for money you don't want exposed to rupee fluctuation. Each serves a different purpose depending on your fund source and repatriation intent.
PPF — Only If You Already Have One
NRIs cannot open new PPF accounts. If you opened one while a resident and later became an NRI, you can continue it under specific, recently changed rules — covered in detail separately, since a real regulatory change in October 2024 affects this meaningfully and isn't reflected in a lot of older content still circulating online.
Real Estate
NRIs can purchase residential and commercial property in India (agricultural land, plantation property, and farmhouses are generally restricted under FEMA). This is a substantial, illiquid commitment — worth weighing against the genuine management overhead of owning property from abroad, covered in more detail in our NRI real estate comparison piece.
PMS and AIF — For Larger Portfolios
Portfolio Management Services and Alternative Investment Funds are available to NRIs, typically with substantial minimum investment thresholds (the same regulatory minimums that apply to resident HNI investors). These offer more customized, actively managed exposure than mutual funds, at a correspondingly higher entry point and cost.
A Quick Comparison
| Category | Best suited for | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Mutual funds | Diversified, professionally managed exposure with simple access | Some AMCs restrict US/Canada NRIs |
| Direct equity (PIS) | Investors wanting direct stock selection | More operational setup than mutual funds |
| NRE/NRO/FCNR FDs | Capital preservation, predictable returns | Lower growth potential than equity |
| PPF (existing only) | NRIs who already had one before moving abroad | Cannot open new; recent rate rule changes apply |
| Real estate | Return-to-India plans, family housing needs | Illiquid, high management overhead from abroad |
| PMS/AIF | Larger portfolios wanting active management | High minimum investment thresholds |
How to Actually Choose
Start from your goal, not the product: capital preservation points toward FDs; long-term growth with diversification points toward mutual funds or direct equity; a return-to-India plan might justify real estate; a larger, more complex portfolio might warrant PMS/AIF. Matching goal to category first, before comparing specific products within a category, avoids the common mistake of picking an investment because it's popular rather than because it fits your actual need.
